New Contrast Crisis Averted

New Contrast Saved from disaster

Our sincerest thanks goes to AE Ballakisten aka Athol Williams website
for his very generous contribution to help us get New Contrast Issues out for the rest of the year.

However, we still need some extra money to get our audits done.

The more subscribers we can get, the lower the unit costs and the more likely we are to survive.  New Contrast has been subsidized up to 400% in the past.  If we could ask you to take out a subscription to keep literature alive in South Africa.  Or if you are already a subscriber, to buy an electronic subscription for a friend.  This would help us immensely. Please subscribe here ==> Buy New Contrast Subscription

We are in need of an audit for the past 3 years.  We have had no funds to do this.  Without a special audit by chartered accountants, we are unable to get funding from corporate, government, and other donors, like Lottery and so on.

We also have some Bumper Birthday Issues left over that you can get here ==> Buy 50th Birthday Issue

If you wish to donate to Special Projects, Gift Issues or Subscriptions to Schools or  Local Libraries please go here ==> Donations to New Contrast

You can also advertise your new Book, Publisher, or other Service or Product on the website or in the paper or electronic copy of New Contrast here ==> Advertise in New Contrast

Visit our site for more information and other here ==> Visit New Contrast website

Every little bit helps.

Thanks you for your support and your contribution to Literature in South Africa.

New Contrast in Crisis

Dear Friends

How many of the faces in the attached picture can you recognize? All of them appeared
in Contrast / New Contrast and many were first published there. South Africa’s foremost
literary journal has survived crises for over 50 years. We’ve reached another crisis moment,
this time financial.

The magazine has always depended on subsidy – subscriptions cover less than half
the cost of production. Now the devastating loss of Stephen Watson, whose presence
on the Board was our main (sometimes only) channel to funding, means we have lost
the complex relationships he had with funders, and our funds have all but dried up.
There is not quite enough to publish the next edition (the shortfall is about R15000) and
thereafter the future looks bleak. Although our subscription base has doubled
under Hugh Hodge's editorship, it is not enough to cover the production costs.
Increased subscriptions will help with economies of scale.

Our catch-22 situation is this: In order to apply for State or corporate funding,
we need to complete 3 years of audits. The books are up to date, but the audit
needs to be signed off by a Chartered Accountant, and this seems set to cost R60 000!

I’m asking you to either

* Make a donation,
* Buy a print subscription
* Buy an e-subscription only R100
* Suggest a literature-friendly chartered accountant: [ click here]

Also, please send this appeal on to your friends, and help to save an important piece
of our common culture.

Yours warmly

Michael Cope

New Contrast needs your help

How you can help New Contrast

We have a number of our 50th birthday issues left over. It is a bumper issue with some of the original poets of the 1960s (Nadine Gordimer, Jack Cope, Etienne LeRoux, Ingrid Jonker, Uys Krige and more) as well as more contemporary poets and writers. If we could sell these issues would be great = R100 (local) R130 (International). We believe a bit of Africana and part of our heritage.

Have a look on our blog at New Contrast 50th Birthday-bash for a write-up of the event.

We have an article that we would like to get into newspapers both local and national if possible, or even magazines would be great. If you can help us here I will forward it to you.

Another way to help is to get a collection going to sponsor back-copies or a subscription of new contrast to get into your local schools in the hope of them subscribing next year.

Also very few of our local libraries stock New Contrast. If we can get it into all local libraries would also be fantastic. So if we knew who the people were to contact (the ones that make the decisions) would also help.

Give a family member or a friend a gift subscription of New Contrast for their birthday or for Christmas.

New Contrast uses Monsterpay

New MonsterPay Features

Virtual Credit Card Terminal

The Virtual Credit Card Terminal now makes it possible to accept totally secure credit card payments over the phone, or in person, without the need for a POS terminal. Buyers often feel unsure about disclosing their credit card details to a merchant, whether this is done face to face, online, or telephonically. The Virtual Credit Card Terminal offers a solution to this problem!

The principle behind this innovative payment method is that the merchant is not given access to all of the buyer’s credit card information. The buyer receives an instant payment request via SMS or email, whereby they must submit their CVV number to MonsterPay.

This ensures that the CVV number is inaccessible to the merchant, and the buyer can rest assured that no transaction can be processed without their knowledge and consent. This security measure gives both the buyer and the merchant even greater protection.

Contributors to New Contrast

Contributor Information Page

Contributors need to have a subscription to be published in New Contrast (either an e-sub, a paper subscription, or both).

You will be published in the e-issue as well as the paper issue, as long as you have a subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I have a paper subscription and an e-subscription? Yes, with pleasure.

  • If I choose an e-subscription will I still be published in the printed magazine? Yes, definitely.

For the profile page

  • If I don't have a website or blog, will this be a problem in setting the profile up? No, no problem. The profile can be set up with or without a website link, and with or without a blog link. These can be added later if you so choose.
  • What if I have more than one link I want featured? You can have as many links as you wish, say up to 10 max.

How does this work?
Have a look at Hugh, Sonja, and Jonty's pages for examples... to have a look, click on the underlined bits called links [for newbies].

You need a good picture of yourself, a write-up of what you've done in the literary world, something personal, something funny or quixotic (if you wish), where people can get hold of you (if you want them to get hold of you) where they can buy your books, poetry, CDs, or other products [we can help you with this if you have things you want to sell but don't know where... check out our other services at Hugh's Hodge-Podge-Services and Sonies Services].

Submit your short stories, flash fiction, poems, poetry, essays, reviews, or other literature for contribution to New Contrast
